How to evaluate research studies

There are many groups of people that need to be more in tune with how to determine if the information that is being provided to them regarding a product or ingredient is factual and valid. Consumers and even more importantly those who write about these natural products should ask themselves a number of questions when they are reading and then evaluating reports regarding research.

It is well known in the scientific community that the peer-review process (studies are reviewed by others in the academic community before publication) can help eliminate many concerns about the credibility of a study.

Here are a few questions that need to be answered before any research can be accepted as being valid.

  1. Was the study done by a credible institution and qualified researchers
  2. Were the materials used equal (in dose and quality) to that which are known to have a therapeutic affect.
  3. Was the study funded by those who have a vested interest in the outcome?
  4. Is it a preliminary study or have other studies reached the same conclusions?
  5. Is the population large enough and the study long enough?
  6. Was the study peer-reviewed in a qualified academic journal?
  7. Does the report avoid absolutes?
  8. Does the report fit the study into the appropriate context for its intended use?
  9. Do the results only apply to a certain group (age, sex, and race) of people?
